Lawyer Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN, representing Nigerian musician Seun Kuti, has criticized the Lagos State Police Command for violating the law by handcuffing his client and subjecting him to a media trial and police harassment.
Olumide-Fusika stated that it was unconstitutional and unjust for the police to treat Kuti with contempt after he willingly responded to their invitation.
Kuti has been transferred to the Force Criminal Investigation Unit at Panti, Yaba, where he is currently being held. The lawyer explained that Kuti reported to the Commissioner of Police’s office in Ikeja along with another lawyer.
However, instead of being interrogated, it was decided that he would be moved to the Force Criminal Investigation Unit. Before his transfer, Kuti was handcuffed and his photograph was taken in public by the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, who shared the image in the media.
Olumide-Fusika emphasized that Kuti is presumed innocent until proven guilty and criticized the police for violating Section 9 of the Lagos State Administration of Criminal Justice Law, which prohibits the parade of criminal suspects in the state.
He also argued that handcuffing Kuti is illegal and violates Section 5 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law.
The lawyer expressed disappointment in the police’s disregard for the law and called for the authorities to uphold the principles they are meant to enforce.
He concluded by stating that they are awaiting the police’s next actions regarding the alleged misdemeanor involving Seun Kuti
