Agbeni market in Ibadan ravaged by devastating fire, millions of naira worth of goods lost

The popular Agbeni Market located in the Ibadan North West Local Government Area of Oyo State experienced a devastating fire on Sunday morning.

According to reports, the fire broke out at approximately 4:30 am, resulting in significant damage and the loss of goods worth millions of naira.

Yemi Akinyemi, the General Manager of the State Fire Service, confirmed the incident, stating that the agency received a distress call at 4:37 am.

Firefighters were swiftly dispatched to the scene and successfully extinguished the fire. Although five rows of shops were severely damaged, there were no casualties reported.

The prompt response of the fire service prevented the complete destruction of the entire market and saved valuable properties worth billions of naira.

Affected shop owners, such as Funmilayo Faruoq and Taiwo Emmanuel, expressed their distress over the incident. Funmilayo, who deals in chemicals used for farming and soap making, received a distress call around 3:45 am and despite frantic efforts to contain the fire, the losses amounted to millions of naira.

Taiwo, who was in Kisi at the time, received a similar distress call and despite immediate mobilization, his business outlet suffered extensive damage, resulting in the loss of goods worth millions of naira.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and investigations are underway to assess the extent of the damage and provide support to the affected traders.
