Former Nigerian ambassador sues First Bank for missing jewelry worth N448 million

Former Nigerian ambassador to Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde, Justina Eze, has filed a lawsuit against First Bank over the alleged disappearance of her safe deposit box containing valuable jewelry from the bank’s vault.

Eze, who also served as a representative for Uzo Uwani, Enugu, in the House of Representatives during the second republic, claimed that in 1999, she entrusted the jewelry to the bank’s branch in Enugu before her departure to Cape Verde as an ambassador.

However, upon her husband’s death in 2006, she discovered that the branch could not account for the jewelry when she requested its return.

The jewelry, which is now valued at N448,037,760, remains missing.

In the suit filed at a high court in Enugu state and presided over by Judge Chinyere Ajogwu, Eze and her daughter are seeking either the return of the missing jewelry or the monetary value as compensation.

They are also requesting N50 million as damages for the psychological trauma, loss of esteem, and loss of use they have suffered due to the bank’s failure to return the jewelry despite repeated demands.

Additionally, they are seeking N50 million to cover the cost of legal fees.
