Former NBA player Dwight Howard has found himself embroiled in controversy after he referred to Taiwan as a “country” in a promotional video featuring the vice president of the democratic island.
The 37-year-old basketball star, who joined Taiwan’s professional team Taoyuan Leopards last year, has enjoyed immense popularity in the region. However, his comments have ignited the ire of Chinese nationalists.
Taiwan, a self-governed democracy with its own military, currency, and elected government, is not officially recognized as an independent country by most nations due to China’s claim over it.
The issue of Taiwan’s status has fueled tensions between China and Taiwan, forming a key component of Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s nationalistic vision.
The video, released as part of Taiwan’s campaign to attract foreign tourists, sparked immediate anger in China, with social media platforms ablaze with demands for an apology from Howard.
The clip showcased the Presidential Office Building in Taipei, where tourists can spend a night.
However, Chinese censors swiftly removed the video, erasing Howard’s praises of Taiwan’s culture and hospitality.
Amid the growing backlash, Howard described his use of the word “country” as a result of a “communication barrier” and expressed his apologies if he had offended anyone in China.
He emphasized that he had no intention to involve himself in politics and had deep respect for both the Chinese and Taiwanese people.
This incident is not the first time the NBA has faced controversy in China. In 2021, Enes Kanter and Daryl Morey’s comments on China’s treatment of Tibet and support for Hong Kong protesters, respectively, drew severe backlash.

The NBA has struggled to navigate the tension between maintaining free speech and preserving its lucrative market in China.
International brands and individuals have also faced boycotts in China if they are perceived to support Taiwan’s sovereignty.
The incident involving Howard highlights the delicate nature of discussing Taiwan’s status and the potential consequences for individuals and organizations entangled in the geopolitical dispute.
While Taiwan’s Presidential Spokesperson expressed sadness over the hearts of some Chinese internet users being broken, she emphasized Taiwan’s welcoming nature and the importance of understanding the country better.
