Lagos state government arraigns Eze Ndigbo on terrorism charges

The Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate in Lagos, Frederick Nwajago, has been brought before the state high court in Tafawa Balewa Square on charges of alleged terrorism.

The Lagos State Government arraigned him on nine counts, including attempted acts of terrorism, participation in terrorism, meeting to support a proscribed entity, attempted financing of terrorism, and preparation to commit an act of terrorism.

Nwajagu’s arrest came after a video went viral on April 1 in which he threatened to invite members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to Lagos to protect the properties of Igbo people living in the state.

In the video, he explicitly stated his intentions to mobilize for the security of Igbo-owned shops and to pay IPOB members for their services.

The Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, responded by stating that the command would resist any presence of IPOB in the state.

Following his initial appearance before the Lagos State Magistrates’ Court in Yaba, Nwajago was remanded in prison custody.

On Tuesday, he was presented before Justice Yetunde Adesanya, and the Lagos State Ministry of Justice formally arraigned him.

The representative of the Attorney General of Lagos State, Jonathan Ogunsanya, informed the court that Nwajago had violated various sections of the Terrorism (Prevention & Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Despite the charges brought against him, Nwajago pleaded not guilty when they were read to him. The judge adjourned the case until July 4 to begin the trial proceedings.
