Supreme court affirms Ademola Adeleke as Osun state governor in breaking verdict

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court of Nigeria rendered a decision declaring Ademola Adeleke as the Governor of Osun State.

The decision overruled the verdict of the Justice Tertse Kume-led tribunal that had earlier annulled Adeleke’s victory and declared Adegboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress as the winner of the election held on July 16, 2022.

In the election, Adeleke, a candidate from the Peoples Democratic Party, was announced the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission after polling 403,371 votes.

This was higher than the 375,027 votes obtained by Oyetola. However, Oyetola and the APC rejected the results and headed for the tribunal to challenge the outcome of the poll.

After several hearings, the tribunal ruled on January 27, 2023, in a majority verdict, that Adeleke’s victory was invalid and awarded the victory to Oyetola.

Adeleke then proceeded to appeal the decision at the Supreme Court, which ruled in his favor on Tuesday, May 9, 2023.
