Leicester face relegation threat after 5-3 loss to Fulham

Leicester City’s Premier League survival chances took a hit after their 5-3 loss to Fulham on Monday night. Fulham’s Willian and Tom Cairney both scored twice as the Cottagers close in on a top-half finish in their return to the top flight.

Meanwhile, the Foxes, who won the Premier League title in 2016 and lifted the FA Cup two years ago, are now in danger of relegation.

They are currently outside the relegation zone only on goal difference. Leicester could drop into the bottom three if Everton win against Brighton and Nottingham Forest pick up at least one point at home to Southampton.

Dean Smith’s men also face a tough run-in with Champions League-chasing Liverpool and Newcastle to come before ending the season at home to West Ham.

Leicester have conceded the third-highest number of goals in the Premier League, and defensive deficiencies were again their undoing at Craven Cottage.

Willian’s free-kick from out wide opened the scoring just ten minutes in. Fulham’s top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic was still serving an eight-game ban for pushing a referee. Fulham’s Carlos Vinicius was then given ample space to fire home the second from Harry Wilson’s pass.

Two cool finishes from Cairney either side of half-time made it 4-0 before the visitors’ forward line got in the game. Leicester’s Harvey Barnes fired home from James Maddison’s pass, but Jamie Vardy’s penalty was saved by Bernd Leno.

Fulham swiftly went up the other end to make it 5-1 as Willian smashed home another strike from outside the box.

Maddison scored a penalty to make it 5-2, and Barnes scored the third goal after a defensive mix-up between Shane Duffy and Leno.

Despite their late goals, Leicester could not salvage a result and face a nervous wait to see where they will sit in the table before their next match against Liverpool.
