An All Progressives Congress (APC) group has called on President-elect Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and the National Working Committee members to prevent one geopolitical zone from producing two presiding officers in either of the two chambers of the 10th Assembly.
The group, APC Integrity Group, warned that it would be in the party’s interest to zone the presiding offices of the Senate President, Deputy Senate President, Speaker, House of Representatives, and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives to different geopolitical zones.
The warning comes ahead of a crucial meeting of the APC National Working Committee (NWC) on Monday to determine which regions and consensus candidates should be considered for the Senate presidency, Speaker, and other principal offices.
The decision follows a closed-door meeting between the party leadership and Tinubu on Friday.
The aspirants vying for the Senate presidency include former Zamfara Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, immediate past Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godwin Akpabio, Chairman of Senate Committee on Appropriation, Senator Jibrin Barau, Senate Chief Whip, Orji Uzor Kalu, and others.
Those contesting for Speaker of the House of Representatives include Tajudeen Abass, Muktra Betara, Ahmed Idris Wase, Ben Kalu, and Miriam Onuoha.
The Coordinator of APC Integrity Group, Malam Dawu Mohammed, said that it would be injurious to both the party and President-elect if one region is favored at the expense of others, and warned of a potential crisis in the legislative arm.
Mohammed added that events in the last week have indicated that certain lawmakers have been favored for the positions of Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives.
He advised that two presiding offices should not go to one geopolitical zone to avoid harming the unity and existence of the party. The APC Integrity Group expects those who take lawmakers to the President-elect for endorsement to act in the interest of the country and not for personal gain.
