Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denied having any conversations with the White House after classified US intelligence documents were leaked on social media. The leaked documents disclosed sensitive US intelligence collection on allies including Ukraine, South Korea and Israel.
The alleged leaker, 21-year-old Air National Guardsman Jack Teixeira, has been charged under the Espionage Act but has yet to enter a plea.
The leak exposed weaknesses in how the Pentagon safeguards its most sensitive secrets, prompting the US Air Force to suspend two leaders of Teixeira’s Massachusetts Air National Guard unit. Zelensky learned about the leak through news coverage and said he “did not receive information from the White House or the Pentagon beforehand.”
He called it “unprofitable” for Ukraine and damaging to the reputation of the US. In response, Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder said Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had “conducted a large number of phone calls” to allies and partners, including to Austin’s Ukrainian counterpart, Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov, but did not comment on Zelensky’s claims.
The leak of classified information has raised concerns over the safety and security of sensitive intelligence documents. The incident also comes at a time when the US is trying to maintain close relations with its allies and partners, particularly Ukraine, which is currently in conflict with Russia.
