As tensions between Russia and Ukraine escalate, the Russian authorities have banned the unauthorised use of drones indefinitely. The ban was announced by the Mayor of Moscow, Sergey Sobyanin, after Kremlin accused Ukraine of attempting to launch a drone attack on the residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The assassination attempt was allegedly unsuccessful due to electronic defences disabling the drones.
The new measure, which came into effect on Wednesday, prohibits the flying of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the Russian capital without the authorities’ approval. The mayor stated that the decision was taken to prevent unauthorised use of UAVs, which could hinder the work of law enforcement agencies. Anyone who breaks the rule may face administrative and criminal liability.

The announcement came as the Kremlin press service reported that Kiev forces attempted to strike Putin’s residence overnight using two drones, which they described as a “terrorist act.” The Russian leader was unharmed, and the drones did not cause any other casualties or damage.
The war between Russia and Ukraine started more than a year ago, and tensions continue to rise. In late April, Ukraine claimed responsibility for an attack on an oil terminal in the Crimean port of Sevastopol, which destroyed four oil tanks. The same month, a drone carrying 17kg of explosives crashed near Moscow, allegedly of Ukrainian design.

In response to the attempted assassination of Putin, Kremlin has maintained that it has the right to strike any target in retaliation. The ban on drones is one of many measures being taken to prevent further attacks and maintain control over the conflict. The situation remains tense, with both sides continuing to take action and make threats against each other.
