Man sentenced to 13 years in jail for armed robbery in Nasarawa

Gwom Ali, a 29-year-old man from Plateau State, has been sentenced to 13 years imprisonment by a High Court in Nasarawa State for armed robbery. Ali was arrested by the Nigerian Police Force in November 2020 after a robbery attack in Gunki-Marmara, Nasarawa LGA, and has been in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service since then.

The defendant was charged with two counts of armed robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm. He was accused of robbing an Okada rider, Hassan Ahmed, at gunpoint and taking away his motorcycle and the sum of N130.

During the trial, the prosecuting counsel presented the defendant’s confessional statement through the Investigating Police Officer, stating that Ali had admitted to committing the crime. The defense counsel did not provide any evidence in defense of her client after the close of the prosecution’s case.

After considering the evidence presented, Justice Sunday Bawa of the Nasarawa High Court concluded that the prosecution had proved the offenses of armed robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm against the defendant under the robbery and firearms Act (Special Provision) Act, Laws of Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
