Manchester United recorded a crucial 1-0 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday, with Bruno Fernandes’ goal securing the three points for the Red Devils. The win moves United nine points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham and strengthens their push for a top-four finish in the Premier League.
Despite the on-field success, off-the-field uncertainty continues to surround the club, as fans protest against the ownership of the unpopular Glazer family. On Sunday, hundreds of fans marched from central Manchester to Old Trafford, calling for the Glazers to sell the club with a banner that read “Full Sale Only”.
The Glazers are currently assessing offers from Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani and Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos group to buy the club. Sheikh Jassim is reportedly seeking full ownership, while Ratcliffe would purchase just over 50% of United’s shares, allowing the Glazers to remain at the club, which would be unpopular with many fans.
Meanwhile, United’s head coach Erik ten Hag is closing on a Champions League berth in his first season in charge of the club. However, the team has struggled for goals this season and failed to kill the game against Villa, despite enjoying the bulk of possession in the first half.
Watch the highlights:
Midfielder Casemiro hit the crossbar with a right-footed shot just before the half hour, and Fernandes finally broke through in the 39th minute, turning in at the far post after Emiliano Martinez had pushed away a low Marcus Rashford strike. United started the second half sluggishly before finding their feet again, but they were unable to score a second goal to give themselves breathing space. Villa had some late pressure, but United held on to take all three points.
