Couple arrested for planning fake kidnap to extort money from UK relatives

A couple has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly planning to extort N5 million from their relatives. The husband, a 53-year-old technician and his wife, a 48-year-old body massager and bone setter, were apprehended on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.

The couple had planned their self-kidnap to raise N3 million to buy back their house in the Badagry area of Lagos. According to the police, the man brought the idea and sold it to his wife, and he claimed he did it because he wanted to repurchase his house with the money.

The husband said his brothers and sisters were unwilling to assist him financially, so he organised the self-kidnap. When the police visited the couple’s house, they met the wife and three children, and the police requested the woman to follow them to the police headquarters, which was granted.

The police arrested the woman the next day when she came to the station as promised, and her husband was arrested the following day. The couple admitted to the crime, but they regretted their action and appealed to their families and the police for forgiveness. They would be charged soon, the police explained.
