Politicians mourn renowned journalist Peter Enahoro

The passing of Nigerian journalist, author and publisher Peter Enahoro, known as Peter Pan, at the age of 88 has led to an outpouring of condolences and tributes. Enahoro, who served as Editor of the Nigerian Sunday Times at just 23 years old, was the younger brother of First Republic politician and elder statesman Chief Anthony Enahoro.

The President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, extended his condolences to Enahoro’s family, describing him as a “gifted and iconic journalist, author and publisher” who earned the public trust with his fearless writing and tenacity in pursuit of the truth.

The President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, also praised Enahoro’s lifelong commitment to media excellence, noting his role in Nigeria’s march to nationhood through his use of media practice to promote good governance, rule of law and social justice.

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, hailed Enahoro’s international influence as a contributing editor of Radio Deutsche Welle in Cologne, Germany; Africa Editor of National Zeitung in Basel, Switzerland; and Editorial Director of New African magazine in London.

The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, called Enahoro a “national treasure” who secured his place in history during Nigeria’s early years of nationhood, describing his satirical pieces and gutsy debates with the country’s premiers as insightful and critical. Enahoro attended the prestigious Government College, Ughelli, alongside the famous poet and Africa’s first professor of English, JP Clark.
