President Joe Biden has announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election, despite being the oldest US president ever at 80 years old. In a video message posted on Twitter, he said that he was running for re-election “to finish the job” and protect American democracy.
Although Biden faces no real Democratic challenger, he may encounter difficulties during a potential rematch against Donald Trump, who has already criticized Biden’s announcement. Biden has dismissed concerns over his age and fitness for the role, and his campaign will be based on his policy wins and experience in foreign policy, including his alliance with Ukraine.

Furthermore, he will emphasize the need to restore the economy with a focus on manufacturing and jobs for the middle class. Despite Biden’s approval ratings remaining below 50%, his supporters argue that the Democratic Party’s strong performance in the 2022 midterm congressional elections validate the Biden brand. Nevertheless, a recent NBC News poll found that 70% of Americans, including 51% of Democrats, believe he should not run.
Biden’s announcement comes as Republicans are starting a primary season with the overwhelming favorite being Donald Trump, who remains popular among his supporters, despite his indictment and attempts to overturn his loss to Biden in the 2020 election.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is a potential Republican challenger who, like Trump, presents a right-wing agenda, albeit with a starkly different age at 44.

Biden will have the advantages of incumbency and a united party while campaigning for the next year and a half. He also has a strong foreign policy background, which he will highlight during his meeting with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is starting a state visit to the White House.
While Biden may appear dull compared to Trump, he will rely on his moderate image and the idea that he is a better alternative than Trump. In the end, Biden’s policy wins and experience may be what sets him apart from other potential candidates, rather than his age.
