Two of the Chibok schoolgirls who were abducted by Boko Haram in April 2014 have escaped from their captivity. The girls, identified as Hauwa Mutah and Esther Markus, reportedly escaped from Sambisa forest on April 23, 2023, due to the intense military operations against Boko Haram.

The number of Chibok schoolgirls in captivity has reduced from 98 to 96 with their escape. The terrorists had kidnapped 276 girls from Government Secondary School in Chibok in 2014, and since then, some have escaped or been released, while others remain in captivity. Colonel Obinna Ezuipke, the head of the Intelligence Unit of the Joint Military Task Force, Operation Hadinkai, said that 178 girls have been released or rescued so far, with 98 still in Boko Haram captivity.
