In a statement signed by Hassan Musa Fagge, Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor of Kano State, it was revealed that Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, the Governor of Kano State, has pardoned a total of 4,013 inmates across all correctional facilities in the state over the course of eight years. Additionally, fines and compensations totaling N4.4 million have been settled for the inmates during the same period.
During the Eid-el-Fitr celebration at the Goron Dutse custodial facility, the governor’s deputy, Dr Nasiru Gawuna, represented the governor and announced the release of 43 inmates who were serving jail terms for various offences. He emphasized the importance of freedom and urged the pardoned inmates to demonstrate good character in society.
Suleiman Inuwa, the Controller of the correctional service in Kano State, lauded the government’s gesture, saying it would help decongest the facilities and ensure a peaceful atmosphere. He also urged other states to follow suit and encouraged the beneficiaries to be model citizens.
Abdullahi Rano, the chairman of the council on the prerogative of mercy, expressed gratitude to the governor for exercising his constitutional power to release the inmates based on the recommendation of the correctional service management and the council.
