On Saturday, the Minister of Youths and Sport Development, Sunday Dare, announced the temporary closure of the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos. The decision was made after the collapse of a floodlight mast was reported, posing a potential risk to the public.
The incident occurred just a day after the minister’s scheduled visit to the stadium on Friday, during which he promised to make his stand known after due assessment. After touring the stadium on Friday, he discovered that three other light masts were showing signs of aging and exposure to weather elements, making them a potential risk factor as well.
On Saturday, after inspecting the collapsed floodlight mast, Dare issued a statement announcing the closure of the stadium until necessary action can be taken to ensure the safety of the public. He expressed gratitude that there were no casualties resulting from the collapse and emphasized the need for caution.

“Based on my assessment, advice of experts, and in the interest of public safety, there will be a temporary closure of the stadium and surrounding facilities,” the minister said. “Proper assessment and necessary action will be taken soon.”
Dare also noted that the concession process towards fully privatizing the Surulere stadium, which began last year, would be expedited by the Federal Government through the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC). The goal is to ensure comprehensive rehabilitation and upgrade of the 51-year-old edifice.
