Blessing Okoro finally released from detention following allegations of cyber-bullying and libel

Blessing Okoro, a social media influencer known as Blessing CEO, has been released from detention after being held for three weeks on allegations of cyber-bullying, libel, and exhibiting uncensored movies.

The police had arraigned Okoro before Justice Yelim Bogoro of the Federal High Court on six counts, including allegedly bullying and threatening Folashade Samuels, exposing her and her late sister Bimbo Ogbonna to ridicule and contempt, and exhibiting a film and video work titled “Sweet Sour” without a censorship certificate and without holding a licence as issued by National Film & Video Censors Board (NFVCB).

The police prosecutor had filed a proof of information before the court, alleging that Okoro intentionally sent messages using her Instagram handle to bully, threaten and harass Samuels.

The prosecutor identified some of the messages the blogger sent, which included questions about Samuels’ relationship with her sister before she died, whether she owed her late sister 18 million, whether her sister blocked her before her death, and whether she even liked her sisters’ children.

The police also accused Okoro of harming the reputation of Samuels and Bimbo Ogbonna, exposing them to hatred, contempt and ridicule. The police further cited that the blogger wrote on her Instagram handle that Bimbo killed herself and had always wanted to kill herself right from childhood, and that she would slam the internet with raw facts and evidence.

On Tuesday, April 4, 2023, counsel for Blessing CEO filed a bail application before Justice Tijjani Ringim of the Federal High Court in Lagos on her behalf. The judge granted her bail in the absence of opposition, with bail conditions set at N10 million each with two sureties in like sum.

Justice Bogoro had ordered that Okoro should be remanded at Nigerian Correctional Services Custodial Centre until May 30 for the hearing of her bail application after pleading not guilty to the charges. Okoro regained her freedom after the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos granted her bail for alleged cyber-bullying.

The late Bimbo Ogbonna, the wife of a Lagos celebrity auto-dealer, Ikechukwu Ogbonna, died last year in a fire incident at their residence in Lekki, and Ogbonna is currently on trial at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja in connection with her death.
