Keyamo engages with international media, asserting that “irregularities” during the election are insufficient to alter the outcome

Presidential Campaign Council of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has embarked on an international media tour to defend the outcome of the 2023 presidential election won by its candidate, Bola Tinubu. The team, led by Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Labour and Employment (State), held a press briefing at the National Press Center in Washington D.C on Wednesday.

Mr. Keyamo, who served as the spokesperson of the campaign council, addressed journalists, stating that the irregularities and violence recorded during the election occurred in less than one per cent of the total polling units, and therefore, were not sufficient to change the outcome of the election.

He further highlighted that Mr. Tinubu emerged as the president-elect in a tight race against former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and 15 other candidates. However, Mr. Obi and Atiku are challenging the outcome of the election at the Presidential Electoral Tribunal.

The post-election dispute has taken an international dimension as Mr. Tinubu and the opposition seek the support of the international community. Recently, a writer, Chimamanda Adichie, penned an open letter to US President Joe Biden, criticizing the US government for congratulating Mr. Tinubu on his victory at the polls. This was countered by Yemi Oke, who wrote an open letter to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Biden.

Mr. Keyamo also emphasized the credibility of the 25th February election, noting that the upsets witnessed during the presidential election showed its credibility. He mentioned that 20 sitting governors from the ruling party lost their states, and several APC bigwigs also lost their home states, including the President-Elect, the sitting President, the Director-General of the Campaign, and the ruling Party Chairman.
