The Education Rights Campaign (ERC) University of Ibadan chapter has raised concerns about the poor condition of facilities at the institution. Since the reopening of the university for physical academic activities on March 20, 2023, ERC has noticed the continued poor welfare condition on campus, with electricity and water supplies remaining unreliable.

This has worsened the condition of facilities such as toilets, bathrooms, and lecture rooms across the campus, which may have negative consequences on both academic performance and the health of students.
In a statement signed by Comrade Alesh Debs, the branch secretary of ERC, the group expressed worry and called on the Students’ Union to take action.
The group urged the union to convene a congress of students to discuss the range of issues affecting them on campus, including the prolonged stay in office by the union executive, which allegedly exceeds the period stipulated in the students’ union constitution.

When contacted, Joke Akinpelu, Principal Assistant Registrar of Public Communications at the University, acknowledged that poor electricity supply is a nationwide problem and that the university has been recognized for consistent payment of bills to the power company. She emphasized that the university spends a significant amount on diesel to power generators and welcomed advice from ERC on how to ameliorate the situation.
