Ekiti State University shuts down due to student protests

The authorities of Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, have temporarily closed the institution in response to student protests demanding a review of late registration and other fees imposed by the university. The students, in large numbers, took to the streets on Tuesday morning, brandishing placards and expressing their discontent with the fees, which they described as unbearable and tantamount to extortion.

The Students’ Union Government Public Relations Officer, Dotun Ogunsanya, condemned the N5,000 late registration fee, stating, “This is more worrisome, especially considering that we do not enjoy any facilities in the school. There has been no power supply within and outside the university premises for many years now.”

The Head of the Directorate of Information and Corporate Affairs, Bode Olofinmuagun, issued a statement directing all students to immediately vacate the campus and not be present on the premises for the next two weeks.

The closure of the university comes as a result of the ongoing protests by students, who are seeking a review of the fees levied by the institution. The students have expressed their dissatisfaction with the late registration fee and other charges, citing a lack of facilities and services in the university as the basis for their grievances.

The temporary closure is expected to allow for further dialogue and resolution of the issues raised by the students.
