The @BBC Twitter account, with 2.2 million followers, currently carries the “government funded” label, while other BBC accounts like BBC News (World) and BBC Breaking News do not. Twitter has not provided a clear definition of what it considers “government funded media.” BBC emphasized its independence and public funding through the license fee, and expressed efforts to resolve the issue with Twitter.

This labeling issue comes after a similar one involving America’s National Public Radio (NPR), initially designated as “state-affiliated media” by Twitter, but later changed to “government funded media” after NPR’s backlash. Twitter defines state-affiliated media as outlets where the state exercises control over editorial content through financial resources, political pressures, or production and distribution control.
