In his Easter message to Nigerians, Catholic Archbishop of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah, expressed frustration with the outcome of the 2023 election and called for citizens to rise up and reclaim their country from the current administration. He emphasized that justice had eluded Nigerians, leaving them forlorn and unhappy.
While commending President Muhammadu Buhari for recognizing that his criticisms were not out of malice but a desire for Nigeria’s progress, Kukah condemned the violence that followed the elections, stating that bloodshed should not be the norm for attaining power.

The bishop urged aggrieved citizens to seek justice without resorting to violence, but rather transform their anger into motivation. He emphasized the need to restore the dignity of the Nigerian nation and its citizens, addressing core issues of social justice, equality, and human rights, rather than just focusing on infrastructure and political promises.
Kukah expressed hope that the incoming government would prioritize the well-being of the people and work towards making Nigerians feel whole again, by creating opportunities, cutting off the chains of ethnicity and religious bigotry, and recovering the country’s greatness. He called for the exorcism of nepotism and religious bigotry, and placing Nigeria on the path to collective freedom and national greatness.
