Meta has revealed plans to develop a new app that will compete with Twitter. The company, which owns several social media platforms, aims to create an app with similar features to Twitter that will provide a separate space for creators and public figures to share timely updates about their interests.
The new app will be based on the same framework as Mastodon, a Twitter-like service launched in 2016. Meta’s move is part of its strategy to retain users in its social networks, given an aging user base and increased competition from platforms such as TikTok. According to Forbes, Facebook, one of Meta’s platforms, lost around 500,000 daily users in the last quarter of 2021.
