Political corruption is a pervasive problem in Nigeria, and it appears that corrupt politicians are doing everything in their power to remove Professor Mahmood Yakubu as the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in order to rig the 2023 general elections.
This is according to Professor Hartz Ofoeze, a Professor of Political Science at the Abia State University. In an interview with reporters, Professor Ofoeze explained that these rogue political leaders are desperate to remove Yakubu as the head of the electoral body in order to reject the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and return to the old, fraudulent methods of rigging elections.

The persecution of Yakubu is a clear sign of the fear and desperation of these corrupt politicians, who are threatened by the use of modern technology to conduct fair and transparent elections, according to Professor Ofoeze.
In the past, it was common for politicians to simply write down fake election results and declare themselves winners, but with the implementation of BVAS, it is much harder for them to manipulate the results. This is why they are targeting Yakubu and trying to remove him from his position, said Ofoeze.
In addition to threatening the integrity of the electoral process, these corrupt politicians also pose a threat to Yakubu’s personal safety. Professor Ofoeze expressed concern for Yakubu’s life, stating that these money-hungry politicians will do anything to get him out of their way and subvert the elections, including potentially jeopardizing his safety.
The INEC chairman is determined to do the right thing and ensure that the 2023 general elections are conducted fairly and transparently, but he is being targeted by those who feel threatened by this.

The attacks on INEC facilities in the southeast region of Nigeria are also a cause for concern, according to Professor Ofoeze. He believes that these attacks are an attempt to deprive a presidential candidate with strong support in the region of votes.

These politicians were caught off guard by the popularity of this candidate and would rather see the elections not take place at all than risk losing. However, the implementation of BVAS makes it more difficult for them to manipulate the results, and Professor Ofoeze is confident that Nigerians are watching and will not allow this kind of corruption to continue.
